“It's not that Nicholas Tomlinson didn't have a great job. He worked for Mark Casse for 10 years, learned from the dual Hall of Famer and was around some of his best horses. But he had always wanted to see what he could do on his own and Saturday at Gulfstream will begin the next chapter in his career.”…

CANADIAN NICHOLAS TOMLINSON TARGETS BARBADOS GOLD CUP WITH DECCAN PRINCE

MARCH 6, 2026

Canadian-born trainer, Nicholas Tomlinson will send out Deccan Prince in this year’s Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup, which is scheduled to run on March 7th at the Garrison Savannah.

Raised in Toronto, Ontario, the 31-year-old horseman is Bajan by descent. Tomlinson’s Barbadian-born father, Brian Alleyne, has worked the starting gate at Woodbine for over twenty years.

Walks ‘hots’ as a teenager at Woodbine, Tomlinson gradually progressed up the ranks from hotwalker, to groom and then to becoming an assistant trainer. A familiar face on the backstretch, Tomlinson also used to work for Malcolm and Sally Pierce. For ten years, Tomlinson worked as an assistant trainer to Hall of Fame conditioner, Mark Casse. In 2025, Tomlinson ventured out on his own, setting up shop at Palm Meadows in Florida.

Only four juvenile maidens stuck around for the $100,000 Proud Man Stakes on Sunday at Gulfstream Park, but Watson still managed to put on a show, courageously battling back to defeat first-time starter Gaelic Legacy by a neck.

Coming off a June 13 debut in which he was disqualified from a victory for trainer Nicholas Tomlinson, Watson was a somewhat surprising 7-5 second choice in the Proud Man after Spicy Taco, It’s Smoking, Regent’s Park, and Bourbon On Tap scratched. Instead of heavily backing the proven commodity in the shortened field of four, bettors made Gaelic Legacy the even-money favorite in his first start for trainer Patrick Biancone.

The 32-year-old Toronto native is making a name for himself at Gulfstream Park, where he is saddling winners at a 33-percent rate during the current Royal Palm Meet.
